June 29 - July 4, 2008 and July 6-11, 2008
Sharon Meldrum and Debbie Mitre-Smith are co-directing these exciting weeks for families with hearing parents and at least one Deaf child (ages 18 months to 14 years). Deaf Culture classes for parents will focus on the integration of the Deaf perspective and hearing perspective into everyday family interaction. Presentations will emphasize the following areas: family cultural similarities and differences, human sexuality, and open communication within the home and schools. Professionals in the field of Deafness will be in attendance to lead discussions and present on these topics. While parents attend morning classes, children participate in drama, ASL, horseback riding, boating, hiking, art and group games. Infants and toddlers have separate activities. Teens 16+ will join the adult classes. Afternoons and evenings are filled with activities for the whole families to enjoy. Families registering for the first time must provide their Deaf child's Individual Education Plan. We encourage the attendance of both parents. Single parents are welcome. Parents and children are requested to be in class. Baby-sitting is not provided. Extended family members (e.g. grandparents, grandchildren, cousins, etc.) wishing to attend should contact De Sales Center to check on availability and cost. We are sorry but non-family members cannot be accommodated. Exceptions must be discussed with Program Directors. Cost: $200 per adult; $100 per child; $400 minimum; $700 maximum per family. Individuals 18 years of age or older are considered adults for pricing purposes. Click to register now!
